Pols spend too much on races

After reading about the amount of money being raised and spent for state Assembly and state Senate races this fall, it appears that when you divide the amount of funds spent by the total votes received on primary night, the candidates — both winners and losers — will have shelled out close to approximately $30 per ballot cast in their favor.
Whatever happened to the old-time district captain, who usually held a patronage job of some sort, who was told, “One hundred signatures and 100 votes or else”?
As an old-time doorbell ringer — I started when Col. Jim Roe ran Queens politics — I could deliver my quota with a total of $2 worth of literature, a sore middle finger and a little shoe leather.
Ah, the good ol’ days of summer.
